AirTrunk to build second Osaka hyperscale data centre
Company expanding Japan’s largest hyperscale platform to 530MW, investing US$8 billion
The Asset   17 Dec 2025

AirTrunk says it plans to develop a second hyperscale data centre in Osaka, OSK2, reinforcing Japan’s position as a critical hub for cloud and artificial intelligence ( AI ) infrastructure.

Located in East Osaka, OSK2 will deliver up to 100 megawatts of total campus IT capacity. Designed to meet surging demand from global technology companies and AI workloads, OSK2 will complement the existing OSK1 facility in West Osaka ( 20MW ), providing regional diversity and resilience across the Kansai region.

With the addition of OSK2, AirTrunk will expand Japan’s largest hyperscale platform to approximately 530MW. This forms part of a total investment of approximately US$8 billion across existing and planned projects in the coming years.

Says AirTrunk founder and chief executive officer Robin Khuda: “Japan plays a pivotal role in AirTrunk’s platform growth across Asia-Pacific. As Japan’s cloud and AI adoption accelerates, our continued investment in Osaka and Tokyo reflects our long-term commitment to building the scalable infrastructure that underpins this transformation.

“Japan is not only a key market for us, but a partner in shaping the future of hyperscale and AI innovation. AirTrunk’s Japan investment is one of the largest investments by an Australian company and brings Australia closer to Japan.”

OSK2 will become AirTrunk’s 14th data centre across six Asia-Pacific and Middle East markets, expanding the company’s hyperscale platform to deliver a total capacity in excess of 2 gigawatts from existing data centres with secured power.

Since entering Japan, AirTrunk has invested approximately US$1.57 billion. Last week, the company announced the opening of a new headquarters in Japan, in the Roppongi Hills Mori Tower, a space that has tripled in size to accommodate rapid team growth. AirTrunk currently employs more than 100 people in Japan and plans to double its headcount in the near future to support hyperscale growth and innovation.

This latest expansion underscores AirTrunk’s commitment to powering Japan’s ambitions as a leading regional hub for AI and sustainable digital infrastructure.

Japan is driving its digital transformation through initiatives such as Society 5.0 and the government’s Priority Plan for Digital Society, which place AI and cloud infrastructure at the heart of national development. By embedding AI into public services, industry, and society, and fostering global partnerships with leading technology companies, Japan is positioning itself as a regional leader in responsible AI adoption and sustainable digital innovation, AirTrunk says.
