Citi has appointed Li-Gang Liu as Asia-Pacific head of economic analysis for Citi Global Wealth Management ( CGWM ). Based in Hong Kong, he will report to Steven Wieting, chief investment strategist and chief economist for CGWM, and Roger Bacon, Asia-Pacific head of CGWM APAC ultra-high-net-worth business.

Liu ( pictured ) will provide thought leadership and policy analysis of the region’s key economies, with deepening analysis of China’s economy and future relations with the world. He will lead senior-level discussions with the region’s most sophisticated investors to assist them in making strategic investment decisions.

Prior to his latest appointment, Liu was Citi Research’s chief economist for China from 2016. He has more than two decades of professional experience working in both public and private financial institutions. He was ANZ Bank’s chief economist for Greater China for more than six years.

Before that, he held various senior research roles at the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, the Asian Development Bank Institute in Tokyo, and the World Bank and Peterson Institute for International Economics, both in Washington D.C.

Liu enrolled in the Central University of Finance and Economics in Beijing for two years before earning a scholarship to study in the United States. He holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, as well as master’s and PhD degrees in economics from Johns Hopkins University.
